The buzz these days is on Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning and naturally all attention is gradually turning to Python. Lots of tech companies have adopted the language as an official development language, and I want to introduce you to these companies (in no particular order) and the role Python is playing in powering their solutions:
  1. Yahoo: Yahoo uses Python to power its mapping service, Yahoo Map. Python is used to handle the lookup service and addressing as well as in processing the big data generated
  2. Instagram: Instagram made a total migration to Python 3 as the whole Instagram website is powered by Python Django framework. Instagram is arguably the world's most popular photo sharing website especially after the company was acquired by Facebook. Instagram chose Python because of its simplicity and popularity
  3. Netflix: Apparently, Netflix relies on a combination of some popular packages and a few in-house software libraries, with Python seemingly used in nearly every corner of the business, which is largely run on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform. Netflix revealed last year that they use Python for everything from operations management and analysis through to security and networking. Some of my friends who work at Netflix are skilled Python developers
  4. Amazon: Amazon uses Python for most of its services because they have found Python to be scalable and appropriate for handling big data
  5. Facebook: Facebook image processing backend services are completely powered by Python. Facebook uses Python to power many of its services. As a matter of fact, since acquiring Tornado, Facebook uses it to implement real-time news feed update. Tornado is a Python web framework. Python is the third most popular language used at Facebook beside PHP and C++
  6. Youtube: Many of the millions of users who use YouTube to download and share videos have no idea that their dear video sharing platform is powered by Python. Python accounts for the highly easy and user interactive nature of YouTube
  7. Google: Here comes the big one! Google the most popular search engine in the world is built with Python. Python allows google to switch the traffic & figure out the requirements of search.
  8. Spotify: Spotify is a popular e-commerce platform. Spotify also relies on Python and applies it in its backend service as well as Data Analysis purposes. The backend of Spotify consist of lots of separate services, connected by means of the messaging protocol developed in house. 80% of the services are based on Python
  9. Dropbox: Dropbox is a file hosting and sharing service changing the way we store and use files. This file hosting service has been created using Python.
  10. Reddit: If you are looking for a place to find a lot of information & entertainment across thousands of categories, everybody knows Reddit is the place. This amazing service popularly called the "front page of the internet" is developed using Python.
  11. Quora: Remember one of the word's famous online forums quora? Yea, it's built with Python too.
  12. Bitly: The popular link management platform created by Peter Stern in 2008 shortens close to 600 million links annually. This website also owes greatly to Python as it came into existence because of Python. Little wonder it has lots of API built for Python users
  13. Ashpot: Did I just say Ashpot? Oh yes, I did. Here at Ashpot, we use Python to develop and build applications and services for clients. Our latest products Schoolzy (a school management system) and AshpotLearn uses Python to handle backend processes. We also run training courses covering everything on Python
Also worth an honourable mention are IBM, Nokia, NASA, Walt Disney, Survey Monkey... most of these companies use Python to handle part of or all of their processes. Python has helped them power and provide amazing services that changed our world. As I researched for these article, I saw several other companies that use this wonderful language. As a matter of fact, with the many number of companies using Python I was tempted to stop this article halfway and rather write on "Few companies that aren't using Python, and why they will soon regret it", because the truth is everybody is using Python these days for one thing or the other.
